‘It is health that is the real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver!’
-Mahatma Gandhi
A heart attack can be fatal and the worse part is, it can occur suddenly without any symptoms.
To create awareness among people about the rising burden of heart disease around the world, World Heart Day is observed every year on September 29. Heart disease is a leading cause of death and disability accounting for 17.9 million lives annually. At present, heart disease is a leading cause of death among Indians, accounting for 28% of all causes. Heart disease tends to affect Indians at a much younger age about 10 years earlier as compared to their western counterparts, due to genetic predisposition to heart disease coupled with the rapid adaptation of a westernized lifestyle.
The most common risk factors of heart disease include diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, family history of heart disease, old age, lack of physical activity, low intake of fruits and vegetables, smoking and stress. The World Heart Day is observed to create awareness on the fact that at least 80 per cent of early demise related to heart disease might be prevented by managing major modifiable risk factors such as cigarette consumption, detrimental living standards and a sedentary lifestyle.
THE RISING CONCERN OF CVD IN PANDEMIC TIMES
The burden of CVD is estimated to rise further during the ongoing pandemic, owing to factors of staying indoors, stress, sedentary lifestyle, poor work-life balance, etc. Many patients with existing heart conditions skipped on their routine check-up or visiting the hospital in the fear of getting infected by COVID -19.
- Lack of exercise, sitting in front of the system for long hours, minimal time to carry out regular health check-ups can affect your heart.
- Too much workload and sitting in the same place for long hours can increase the risk of obesity and high blood pressure.
- There is no proper timing or routine for meal intake, workout or meditation. This puts unwanted pressure on the heart which may increase risks of serious cardiovascular diseases.
- Working mothers are stressed out balancing work, household work and kids.
THE WAY FORWARD TO MANAGE HEART HEALTH
Yes, these are difficult times and nobody knows when we will be going back to living a normal life again. But we do know the consequences we might have to face if we do not take care of our heart.
- Take out time for your health. Engage in regular physical activity, do not skip on sleep or meal, stick to healthy diets
- Do not get stressed out. Rewind yourself. Spend time alone pursuing your hobbies or spending quality time of your family
- Build upon your immunity and keep a track of your health through regular testing
- Do not hesitate to visit a doctor’s office if you have a pre-existing heart condition or suffer from symptoms of chest pain, excessive sweating, pain radiating to the shoulder, jaws and arms
